Abstract

This short opinion piece uses my experiences of formulating pseudonyms during my doctoral project as a way of examining this task. Names are our public labels and as such they are part of self-perception and are catalysts for responses to others. Pseudonyms are not empty; they are cultural artefacts in academia which form connections with participants. The issues addressed with regard to re-naming are research context, ontology, method, navigating sensitivities, contextual determination, concluding with a review of congruence and robustness. The task of generating pseudonyms has the potential for being an exciting way of encapsulating how researchers consider participants and research. There are opportunities for creative approaches to create evocative emblems which capture something about research that is distinctly humane
