Abstract
The International Maritime Organisation (IMO) held its second session on Maritime Autonomous Surface Ships (MASS) in April 2023. This chapter looks at the outputs of that discussion and discusses the potential cyber-physical implications and directions based on this most recent session. This cyber security lens will cover a wide range of topics such as cyber physical security, where cyber security can have a physical effect on operations and safety, as well as socio-technical cyber attacks and risks such as misinformation. This chapter will also have a wide lens in terms by looking at a wide threat landscape in the Maritime Autonomous Surface Ships (MASS) context, from jamming attacks that have been well known and used in the past, to the potential threats of tomorrow including those related to Artificial Intelligence. This chapter is roughly organised by the order of topics covered in the IMO MSC 107/5/1 report and highlights key cyber security issues and considerations for each of those topics. It concludes with a high-level of key points for MASS cyber security regulation across the documentation, and with suggested areas for future cyber security (e.g., defence, resilience, regulations) development in the future.
