The evolution and structure of a thermocline eddy is studied analytically and numerically in an approximation of a three-layer viscous rotating fluid at small kibel numbers. The evolution of the density field and the three-dimensional velocity field in a vortical lens and the water surround it are calculated. It is shown that the dimensionless dependence of the radius of the lens on time is universal and is not sensitive to details of the initial density and velocity distributions. Experiments were carried out on a turntable, using two different methods of creating vortical lenses. The dependences of the radius of the vortical lens on time, the initial volume of the lens, the density gradient and the Coriolis parameter were determined. | |
