Abstract
Expanded site-related film screening at Elevation Festival of Experimental Film 2024, Maker Heights, UK. The festival was selected by a peer review team led by Dr Richard Ashrowan. Film / Installation piece involved video projection with a mechanically rotating hula hoop between the projector and the screen. The film relates to the history of the place as a site of play. The film develops from the field of dance film through the use of playful repetition and difference in movement. It expands from the traditions of dance film and my own previous work in dance film by having very little human presence in the image, focusing on the movement of the circular form. The rotating hula hoop in the cinema appears to push the movement of the circle through the screen space through shadow. Mis en abyme (Dällenbach, L 1977) is the technique of placing an image within the same object. The effect of this mis en abyme is to look at the image creation process as well as looking into the movement of the image. The smooth mechanical movement of the hoop in the space contrasts the errant movement of the hoops in the film, bouncing back and forth.
