By coincidence alone, I find myself writing this Editorial 35 years to the day that the discussion meeting on the sulfur bacteria was held at the Royal Society. The aims of this article – which is sort of an Editorial and sort of a Review in a way – are to draw together the contents of the FEMS Microbiology Letters Thematic Issue on Sulfur Metabolism and to consider the state-of-the-art of our field, looking into the past and the future in equal measure...
