dc.description.abstract

Most of the European Union requirements for registration as a midwife can readily be achieved in hospital and community maternity placements. Richer and wider learning may, however, be available through additionally accessing specific experiences. These form part of some pre registration midwifery curricula where short placements in traditionally ‘nursing’ settings may be included. Any student on any midwifery programme should, however, find opportunities to gain a range of additional focused experiences in health and social care if a proactive approach is taken to addressing these learning needs. This chapter guides you to think creatively about gaining these experiences through placements in inter-professional environments, shadowing of other practitioners or visits to other departments. Be ready to move out of your comfort zone and embrace these wider learning opportunities to better inform the holistic care you can offer women and their families in your midwifery practice.
