dc.description.abstract

Practice comprises at least 50% of pre-registration midwifery programmes. The UK Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) requires this to be graded and contribute to degree classification. Understanding the real purpose of practice assessment is essential. Triangulation of that assessment is also important to ensure that a range of individuals or sources contribute to the body of evidence. This may include involvement of your sign-off mentor, other midwives and practitioners or the women and their families. Universities will have different approaches to the application of the principles of practice assessment in the NMC Standards, and interpretation of terminology may vary. This chapter seeks to unravel some of these processes and discuss their benefits and disadvantages. Issues such as ‘protected time’, appropriate supervision and mentoring teams are explored. Top tips for preparing for your practice assessment are provided. Issues which may impact on Fitness to Practise are also discussed.
