dc.description.abstract

Previous studies on the biological activity of the antibiotic novobiocin have indicated that this unique molecule is required intact for full antibacterial activity. Structure-activity investigations performed by other workers have not been able to ascribe its anti-bacterial activity to any one feature of the chemical structure. Single crystal X-ray techniques have therefore been used to determine the structure in the solid state in the hope that this will contribute to a better understanding of the mode of action of the drug.
