The concept of the ‘post-military city’ acknowledges the significance of military space and activities in shaping particular places, but also recognises that contemporary geographies of the military and militarisation are in constant flux. Although the relative importance of the military to urban fabric has declined in many cities as a result of defence spending cuts, this chapter argues that the post-military city is still shaped by people and activities associated with military phenomena. The example of Armed Forces Day (AFD) in Plymouth, UK, is used to explore, illustrate and develop ways of understanding the post-military city. AFD brings together different elements of the post-military city - the armed forces, veterans and civilians - in a spectacle that not only highlights the role of the armed forces but also the role of the city in supporting and shaping them. Drawing on an ethnographic examination of AFD, this chapter sets out a research agenda on the geographies of post-military space. | |
